Selected Project Experience

Consumer Product Exposure Assessments: RETRA scientists have conducted product-specific exposure evaluations for a wide array of consumer items, including kitchenware, hair care tools, cosmetics, sunscreen, supplements, personal care appliances, and industrial coatings. These assessments supported both internal product stewardship efforts and external regulatory compliance, including those under FDA, and other state statues (WA, MN, CA).

Proposition 65 Evaluations for Food, Consumer, and Industrial Products: Across hundreds of products, RETRA scientists have conducted sampling, performed exposure modeling, and toxicological reviews to determine labeling requirements under California’s Proposition 65. Some examples of evaluated products include various types of food (dried seaweed, honey, olive oil, dried fish, soup bases), pharmaceuticals, tools, personal care products, marine products, and medical devices. The team has also developed warning exemption levels for chemicals without Safe Harbor Limits and supported naturally occurring exemption defenses.

Evaluation of Chemical in Dietary Supplements and Pharmaceuticals: RETRA scientists have supported toxicological and exposure evaluations for over-the-counter products and dietary supplements. Assessments addressed both the active ingredients and excipients, with attention to cumulative dose and regulatory thresholds.

Product Safety Litigation Support: RETRA has provided support in litigation matters involving alleged non-compliance with regulatory limits to chemical in consumer products. Services included dose reconstruction, response to expert reports, and courtroom testimony.

Analysis of Indoor Air Contributions from Consumer Products: RETRA scientists reviewed literature and product data to identify volatile organic compounds commonly emitted from consumer goods contributing to indoor air exposures. The effort included screening of product categories and identifying those most likely to elevate residential health risks.
